A Windhager log gasification boiler — and, a year later, a heat pump bolted into the same control system.

A two-phase install on the Black Isle. We first specified and installed a Windhager log gasification boiler with full MES weather-compensation control. A year later, the customer wanted an air source heat pump added — for the days they didn't want to light the log boiler, and for frost protection when away. We worked directly with Windhager to integrate the heat pump into the existing MES control manifold, with automatic switchover and remote access.

The starting point

Off oil, into log gasification — with their own plant room.

The customer had an ageing oil boiler and a clear preference for the heating source: a log gasification boiler, with the fuel sourced locally. They had the space, the inclination to manage a fuel store, and the willingness to build themselves an impressive plant room shed to house the system properly.

Our job was to specify the right kit for the load, install the boiler and buffer, and connect everything reliably to the house — a non-trivial run, given the plant room sat at distance from the building.

Phase one: the biomass system

We specified and installed a Windhager log gasification boiler with a properly sized buffer tank, both housed in the customer's purpose-built plant room shed. The connection to the house ran via underground pre-insulated pipework — sized and laid to keep heat losses minimal over the distance.

The whole system ran under Windhager's MES weather-compensated control, with remote access so the customer (and we) could see system performance and make adjustments without driving out. Weather compensation means the boiler modulates its output against outside temperature rather than just an indoor thermostat — which matters a lot for a log gasification boiler where you want the buffer to be just-warm-enough rather than overcooked or short.

Phase two, a year later: adding the heat pump

Integrating a heat pump into a working Windhager system.

After a year of living with the system, the customer came back with a refinement: they wanted a heat pump added for the days they didn't want to light the log boiler — and, importantly, for frost protection when they were away. A log boiler needs someone home to manage it; a heat pump can take over when nobody is.

The technical question was how to integrate an air source heat pump into a working Windhager MES control manifold without replacing the existing setup. We worked directly with Windhager to specify the integration: the heat pump comes on automatically when the biomass buffer temperature drops below a threshold or when the customer is away, and the controls hand back to the log boiler when the customer is home and the biomass is hot. The whole thing stays on remote access.

This is the kind of install most installers turn down — bespoke manufacturer integration with a non-standard kit combination. It's the kind we particularly enjoy, because doing it properly means working through the engineering with the manufacturer's own controls team, not just bolting an off-the-shelf kit on top.

The outcome

Two heat sources, one control system, complete flexibility.

The home now runs on two heat sources under a single set of controls. When someone is home to manage it, the log gasification boiler does the heating; when they'd rather not light it, or when the house is empty, the heat pump takes over automatically — including frost protection while they're away. No manual switching, no cold house on return.

Because the switchover logic lives in the Windhager MES manifold and everything stays on remote access, the system can be monitored and fine-tuned without a site visit. It's a genuinely bespoke setup — two heat sources most installers wouldn't combine — working as one.
