Case study · Steading conversion

New life into an old steading — near Culloden Battlefield.

A flagship whole-home renewable install on a steading conversion near Culloden. Two Vaillant 7kW heat pumps in cascade for heat and hot water, Viridian solar PV on the roof, a solar + battery storage system, full plumbing and underfloor heating throughout — all linked with remote access. Designed and project-managed in-house as one integrated system.

The starting point

An old steading, fully reborn as a modern home.

The property is a former steading near Culloden Battlefield, taken from working agricultural building to permanent residence by the new owners. The brief was simple to state and demanding to deliver: a renewable system that would serve the building's full heat demand year-round, generate as much electricity as the roof would allow, store enough to handle the bulk of daily demand, and run through a single remote-access control system.

New-builds and substantial conversions are the strongest place to start a whole-home renewable system, because the fabric, the heating distribution and the electrical infrastructure can be designed around the renewable kit from the ground up rather than retrofitted into existing constraints.

What we installed

Three technologies, all sized together, all on remote access.

Two Vaillant 7 kW air source heat pumps in cascade. A cascade arrangement — two units sharing the load rather than a single larger unit — gives better modulation across the year: one unit handles base load efficiently, the second kicks in for peak demand and comes off when not needed. The result is a system that runs closer to its design-point COP for more of the year, with built-in redundancy if one unit ever needs servicing.

Viridian solar PV panels across the available roof area, sized to a high proportion of the property's annual electricity demand.

Solar + battery storage system handling the inverter and storage. The battery is sized to the heat pumps' evening and overnight demand profile, with smart-tariff integration so it charges from cheap-rate windows when solar is short.

Full plumbing and heating works including underfloor heating throughout the property — underfloor pairs particularly well with the cascade heat pump arrangement because the lower flow temperatures keep the COP up.

Remote access across the entire system — heat pumps, solar inverter, battery management, controls. Single login, one view of how the building is performing, and the ability to tune from anywhere.

The outcome

A whole-home renewable system, working as one.

Because the steading was designed around the kit rather than retrofitted to fit it, the pieces work as one: the cascade heat pumps run close to their design point across the year on low-temperature underfloor, the Viridian array covers a high share of the property's electricity, and the battery shifts that generation into the heat pumps' evening and overnight demand.

Everything sits behind a single remote-access login — heat pumps, inverter, battery and controls in one view — so performance can be monitored and tuned without a site visit. It's the flagship example of what we mean by a whole-home system designed as one rather than assembled from separate installs.

The services

Considering a whole-home renewable project?

Conversions and new-builds are the easiest properties to integrate a full renewable system into — everything from the radiator layout to the consumer-unit position can be designed around the kit instead of retrofitted to fit.
