It’s the first question almost every solar customer asks us, usually apologetically: does it even work up here? The honest answer: yes — and by a smaller margin than you’d guess.
The yield question
A well-oriented Scottish roof generates around 80–85% of what the same panels would produce in the sunniest parts of the UK. Panels run on daylight, not warmth — and Scotland’s long summer days do a lot of heavy lifting. Cooler temperatures actually help: solar panels are more efficient in cool weather, which is why a bright May day in the Highlands can out-generate a hot July afternoon in the south.
You don’t need a perfect south-facing roof either. East-west splits — panels on both roof faces — generate across a broader span of the day: a morning peak on the east face, a late-afternoon peak on the west. That shape matches how most households actually use electricity, and it pairs well with a heat pump’s long running windows. Our Beauly case study is exactly this design.
What you get paid for what you don’t use
Under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), your supplier pays you for every unit you export to the grid. Each supplier sets its own rate — from low single digits to over 15p/kWh on the best smart-tariff plans — so the tariff you pair with the system matters as much as the panels. You sign up for the SEG with your electricity supplier; we register the installation on the MCS database and give you the MCS certificate they require.
A battery changes the economics again: instead of exporting surplus at the SEG rate and buying it back in the evening at the full rate, you store it and use it yourself. That’s why most of our solar installs now include storage — and why we size the battery to your evening usage, not just to the array. The quiet subsidy: 0% VAT
There’s no standalone Scottish solar grant in 2026 — but solar PV and battery storage carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, applied at the point of sale with no claim form. On a typical domestic install that’s worth four figures against what the same system would have cost at 20%.

Are solar panels worth it in Scotland?
For most homes with a reasonable roof, yes — especially paired with a battery. Do solar panels work on a north-facing roof in Scotland?
They can — just with a lower yield than south-, east- or west-facing panels. Whether that lower yield still stacks up depends on the roof, the shading and your usage; it’s a survey question, not a yes/no one.
Is there a solar panel grant in Scotland in 2026?
No standalone grant — the old interest-free solar loan was withdrawn in June 2024. What you get instead: 0% VAT on solar PV and battery storage until 31 March 2027, and ongoing export payments through the Smart Export Guarantee.
How many solar panels does a typical Scottish home need?
