Scotland has the strongest heat pump funding in the UK, and most homeowners we speak to underestimate what they can claim. Here’s the 2026 picture in plain language.
The headline numbers
- Up to £7,500 grant towards an air source or ground source heat pump, through Home Energy Scotland.
- Up to £9,000 if your home qualifies for the rural uplift — which, across the Highlands and much of the rest of Scotland, most of the homes we survey do.
- An interest-free loan on top, letting you spread the remainder of the cost with no interest to pay.
The grant is not means-tested. It applies to owner-occupied homes, and the funding is claimed through Home Energy Scotland before the install goes ahead.
What the process looks like
- Talk to us first. A free estimate call tells you whether a heat pump suits your home before anyone fills in a form.
- Home Energy Scotland application. You apply to Home Energy Scotland directly yourself — a short process, starting with one conversation with an HES adviser to confirm eligibility. We provide the technical documents your application needs: the quote, the MCS certificate details, the heat-loss data and expected savings.
- Install, then completion. The system must be installed by an MCS-certified installer (we are) for the funding to pay out. We register the installation on the MCS database and give you the certificate the scheme requires.
Things worth knowing before you apply
The rural uplift is broad. It isn’t limited to remote crofts — the qualifying postcode areas cover most of rural Scotland. We check your postcode as part of the estimate.
Solar is different. There’s currently no standalone Scottish grant for solar PV — the old loan route was withdrawn in June 2024. Solar leans on 0% VAT (until 31 March 2027) and the Smart Export Guarantee instead. If you’re considering a heat pump and solar, the heat pump is where the grant money is.
Funding rules change. Schemes are reviewed, uplifts are adjusted, and rates move — usually with little notice. The figures above are current as of summer 2026; our grants and funding page is kept up to date as the rules change.
